I placed my camera at the heart of places that are without question perceived as sanctuaries: the churches. I invite the viewer to pay attention to the quality of the light that penetrates them, to its subtle play on the furniture, to the materials, and to the set-up of the religious artifacts.
In parallel, I am observing the place worship has taken in our contemporary lives: Some religious communities are being deserted; Churches are being sold and converted into luxurious condos; Religious diversity is on the rise. It would seem other values, other rituals, are filling the landscape of society and spirituality. So what purpose do those institutions serve nowadays, with their buildings, their sacred objects, their iconography, and their symbols? |
